Mother Blues Reunion

Here at Kessler Presents we love to pay tribute to the legendary live music venues that have helped to shape our culture over the 75 years. Whether it's our permanent commitment to revitalization (The Kessler, Longhorn Ballroom, The Heights theater in Houston) or with our special one-night-only throwback events (Starck Club, Theatre Gallery, Video Bar), we relish the opportunity to bring together the various communities that have surrounded these important gathering spots.

Next up is a night dedicated to the iconic Dallas club Mother Blues, which was a nexus for the rock and roll and blues community during the 1970s. Located in a refurbished house on Lemmon Avenue, Mother Blues was the preferred Dallas hang out for international touring acts like Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen, and was the venue where blues guitarist Freddie King earned the name The Texas Cannonball. Local Dallas bands like Lightning, Lynx, U.S. Kids, the Vaughan brothers, and  Bugs Henderson were there every weekend, often jamming with the huge touring acts that dropped by and wanted to sit in for a few songs. On any given night it felt like anything could happen, and many lifelong memories were made along the way.

On June 13, Dallas guitarist Jim Suhler and his band Monkey Beat will help to recreate a night at Mother Blues, with special guests Rocky Athas (lead guitarist of Lightning) and Jimmy Wallace (lead guitarist of Lynx.) It will be a great opportunity to hear some real classic rock and catch up with old friends from that era. Kirby Warnock, who directed the film "When Dallas Rocked" will tell a few stories and emcee the event.
